What Is Pulse Oximetry?

What Pulse Oximetry Can and Cannot Tell You
A pulse oximeter can add useful information to a monitoring plan, but the display is an estimate with limits. It cannot replace a clinical assessment, direct blood measurement or individualized treatment instructions.
It Estimates SpO₂
The displayed oxygen-saturation percentage estimates how much haemoglobin is carrying oxygen in arterial blood. It is not a perfectly exact laboratory value.
It Displays Pulse Rate
The pulse value estimates heart rate during the measurement. An unusual pulse reading also requires context and appropriate clinical review.
It Is Not an Arterial Blood Gas
Pulse oximetry does not directly measure oxygen or carbon dioxide in an arterial blood sample and cannot provide all the information available from blood-gas testing.
It Does Not Measure Ventilation
A pulse oximeter does not show how effectively carbon dioxide is being removed. A person can need urgent assessment even when the SpO₂ display appears acceptable.
It Does Not Diagnose a Condition
A reading alone cannot diagnose low blood oxygen, a heart or lung condition, sleep apnea or another medical problem. Diagnosis belongs to qualified clinicians.
It Does Not Set Oxygen Therapy
