Equipment Suitability
Make Sure the Equipment Fits the Journey
Travel equipment must fit both the prescribed oxygen plan and the practical requirements of the trip.
Portable Oxygen Concentrators
Confirm that the specific POC is suitable for the prescribed oxygen needs, approved by the carrier where required and supported by enough battery power.
Oxygen Cylinders
Compressed oxygen is subject to transportation rules that differ from POCs. Confirm acceptance, quantity, size, storage and handling requirements before travel.
Batteries & Chargers
Use compatible batteries and chargers, check battery condition and plan enough operating time for the complete journey plus delays.
Backup Equipment
Know what backup equipment or oxygen supply applies to the trip and how it will be accessed if the primary setup cannot be used.
Portability does not determine clinical suitability. The smallest or lightest portable concentrator is not automatically appropriate for every oxygen prescription.
Commercial Flights
Flying With Oxygen
Airline approval, medical requirements, equipment acceptance, batteries and onboard use should be confirmed directly with every operating carrier.
Portable Oxygen Concentrators
POCs may be accepted for air travel when the airline approves the device and its procedures are followed. Confirm the exact model before booking.
Compressed Oxygen Cylinders
Passenger-supplied medical oxygen cylinders require airline approval and must meet applicable dangerous-goods, size, stowage and handling requirements.
Medical & Travel Documentation
Ask the airline whether medical clearance, a physician or respiratory-therapy form, equipment details or advance notice is required.
Plan for the Entire Journey
Account for check-in, boarding, flight time, connections, ground delays and the period after arrival before reliable charging or oxygen is available.

Airport Screening and Battery Preparation
Airport security screening and airline approval are separate processes. Prepare for both.
Airport Screening
At Canadian checkpoints, the main POC unit may be screened separately while tubing and masks can remain in the carrying case. Follow screening-officer instructions.
Keep Equipment Accessible
Pack the POC and documentation so the main unit can be presented for screening without unpacking the entire trip.
Carry Spare Batteries Correctly
Spare POC batteries must be protected against short circuit and carried in the aircraft cabin.
Build in Battery Reserve
Carry enough approved battery capacity for the required travel period and the reserve specified by the airline. Transport Canada guidance uses 150% of expected maximum flight duration as an example.

Road Travel With Oxygen
Plan equipment security, ventilation, power, stops and backup arrangements before a long drive.
Secure the Equipment
Transport cylinders and equipment using the approved holder, carrier or storage arrangement so they cannot roll, tip or be struck.
Keep the Vehicle Smoke-Free
Do not smoke or vape in or around the vehicle when oxygen is being transported or used.
Protect From Heat
Do not leave oxygen equipment or batteries where they may be exposed to unsafe heat, direct flames or ignition sources.
Plan Vehicle Power Carefully
Use only approved vehicle-power accessories and confirm charging or operating requirements for the specific equipment.
Compressed oxygen has specific transport rules. Transport Canada provides personal-use exemptions for certain road transport, but cylinder requirements still apply. Follow the equipment instructions and current transport rules.

Transportation providers may have their own rules for POCs, cylinders, batteries, power, storage and medical equipment.
